Files you keep private stay zero-knowledge — we can't read them. The only files our servers can ever unlock are ones you choose to share, add to a deadman switch, or make AI-readable — and you can revoke or reseal any of them anytime. How it works →

Set up your switch once. We'll deliver — even if your subscription lapses.
Once your deadman switch is set up, it fires on schedule regardless of payment status. Your family's protection doesn't depend on a credit card not expiring.

What Would Your Family Do If You Weren't Here Tomorrow?

Lost Forever

Your wife can't find the life insurance policy. Important documents locked in accounts she can't access.

Legal Delays

Your kids wait months in probate for account access. Lawyers charge thousands just to get started.

No Peace of Mind

Your family scrambles during their hardest moments. No plan, no access, no instructions.

There's a better way. Killswitch ensures your family gets what they need, automatically — no lawyers, no delays.

Nothing Fires Without Warning

Worried about a false alarm? Between a missed check-in and delivery, Killswitch sends up to six escalating reminders by email and SMS — and any single check-in resets the clock.

  1. 1

Day before your check-in is due

A friendly heads-up. One click and you're done for another cycle.

  2. 2

Check-in missed — your grace period begins

You set the grace period. Urgent reminders go out when it starts and at the halfway mark.

  3. 3

    Final three days

Critical alerts every day — three days out, two days out, and a final notice the day before.

  4. 4

Only then does your switch fire

Beneficiaries receive their secure links. And if it ever fires by mistake, you can revoke every link immediately.

Zero-knowledge by design

The same wrapped-key model trusted by 1Password and Bitwarden — your private files are unreadable to us, by design.

Sealed by default

Everything you create is Sealed: the file's key is wrapped with your master key, which never leaves your device. True zero-knowledge — not even we can read it.

Delivery without compromise

When you add a file to a switch, a unique key is generated for that share and protected by our server-side vault — unwrapped and delivered only if you stop checking in. Every share has its own key, so you can revoke any one at any time.

Why we built Killswitch

We're early. We built this because our own families needed something simpler than a binder of paperwork and the hope that someone finds it in time. If it works for yours, that's the whole point.

Frequently Asked Questions

What happens if I lose my password?

During registration, you'll receive recovery codes that can restore access to your account. Store these safely - they're your backup if you forget your password. Due to our zero-knowledge architecture, these codes are the only way to recover access. Watch our registration walkthrough in the How It Works section to see how it works.

How secure is Killswitch really?

We use the same encryption architecture as 1Password and Bitwarden - AES-256-GCM encryption with keys derived from your password. Files are encrypted in your browser before upload. Learn more on our Under the Hood page.

What if I'm not satisfied?

Every plan comes with a 7-day free trial — try it risk-free and cancel anytime before the trial ends. Annual plans (1, 2, or 3 years) include a 60-day money-back guarantee: full refund within 60 days, no questions asked. Monthly plans simply cancel at the end of the current period — you're never on the hook for more than one month at a time.

What happens if my payment fails or my subscription lapses?

Your deadman switch still fires. Once you've set up a switch with documents and beneficiaries, it triggers on schedule regardless of subscription status — that's our always-fires guarantee. While your subscription is inactive your account becomes read-only (you can still log in, view, download, and check in via email/SMS reminders), but you can't upload new files or modify switches until you resubscribe. Your existing files and switches stay protected indefinitely.

How the always-fires guarantee works with monthly billing →
What happens to my files if Killswitch shuts down?

Your data is never locked in. You can download every file you've stored at any time, so you always hold your own copy independent of us. And because everything is encrypted with keys only you control, the only people who can ever read your files are you and the beneficiaries you choose. The automatic delivery does depend on the service running, which is exactly why we keep your files fully exportable. We recommend downloading a copy of your files periodically. If we ever wind down, we commit to at least 6 months' notice and a guaranteed export window.

Read our full continuity commitment →
What file types can I upload?

Any file type - PDFs, images, documents, spreadsheets, and more. Common uses include wills, insurance policies, tax documents, and family photos.

How do beneficiaries access the files?

When a deadman switch triggers, beneficiaries receive a unique secure link via email. They don't need a Killswitch account - they can download their assigned files directly.

What happens if a deadman switch triggers accidentally?

There is a grace period you can set to give you extra time to check-in. If one does trigger and you didn't want it to, you have full control of the share links and can revoke them immediately.

Are my files still zero-knowledge if I set up a deadman switch?

Sealed files — the default for everything you create — are fully zero-knowledge, and we cannot access them. A file only becomes readable to our servers in three cases you control: you share it, you add it to a deadman switch, or you mark it AI-readable for a connector session. When you add a file to a deadman switch or create a share link, a unique encryption key is generated for that specific share and encrypted with our server-side vault so we can deliver it to your beneficiary. Each share has its own key, so you can revoke any one at any time without affecting others. All share access is logged with IP and location for full transparency. This is the same approach used by 1Password, Bitwarden, and LastPass for their emergency access features. Learn more on our Under the Hood page.

Can AI assistants like Claude read my files?

Only the files you choose, and only when you say so. By default everything you create is Sealed — encrypted so that not even we can read it. If you connect an AI assistant like Claude, you can mark specific files as AI-readable (we call this Standard mode), which lets that assistant read them during a session you start. The key is held only in memory, only for that session, and is dropped the moment the session ends. Sealed files are never readable by the assistant or by us — even while a connector session is active. You can seal or unseal any file at any time, and it's instant: nothing is re-uploaded. Learn more on our Under the Hood page.

See the full Claude connector guide →
What happens to my data if I cancel?

After cancellation, your account enters read-only mode at the end of your billing period. You can still log in, download files, and check in to your deadman switches — you just can't upload new files or edit existing switches. If you have an active deadman switch with items and beneficiaries, your account stays alive indefinitely so the switch can still fire on schedule. Accounts with no active switches may be removed after an extended period of inactivity, and we send several warning emails before that happens. You can resubscribe anytime to restore full access. Due to our zero-knowledge encryption, deleted data cannot be recovered.
