What If I Just Forget to Check In?

October 09, 2026

With a grace period set, forgetting to check in does not send anything right away. Here is what happens instead, followed through one caregiver's switch: the reminders, the grace period, the one-tap check-in, and the point where her note would actually reach her brother.

If you have a grace period set, forgetting to check in does not send anything. A missed check-in starts the grace period, not a delivery. Killswitch sends reminders first, by email and by text if you turn texts on, and every reminder has a link that checks you in with one tap. The grace period is yours to set. Until it runs out with no check-in, nothing goes out. Even with no grace period, a final notice reaches you 3 hours before anything is sent.

It is easier to see through one person's switch, so here is an example.

What does Killswitch do if you stop checking in?

Write down what only you know. If you stop checking in, Killswitch sends it to the person who needs it.

You keep notes and files in your Library, pick who should get them, and set a check-in schedule. Checking in resets the clock. If the check-ins stop and the grace period runs out, the people you picked get a secure link to what you left them.

So the fair question is the one in the title. Phones die. Weeks get away from people. What happens then?

Who is Maria, and what did she write down?

Maria is an example, not a real customer, but her situation is common.

She is 47 and she handles her dad's care. He lives in an assisted living apartment twenty minutes from her house. Her brother Daniel lives in Phoenix. He calls every Sunday. He has not once refilled one of Dad's prescriptions.

If something happened to Maria, Daniel would be starting from zero. So Maria wrote one note in Killswitch called "Dad, everything Daniel would need." It says:

  • Every medication, the dose, and the time of day. Two in the morning, one at night.
  • The pharmacy, and the fact that refills go in on the 3rd of each month.
  • The cardiologist and the primary care doctor, with their office numbers.
  • Where Dad's Medicare card and supplemental plan card are kept.
  • Where the patient portal login is written down.
  • The front desk number at Dad's building, and which aide knows him best.

She attached a scan of his insurance cards to the note. She made Daniel the one recipient on that switch. She set it to check in every 7 days, with a 5-day grace period.

That is the handoff. Now the forgetting.

What happens the day you forget to check in?

Dad has a bad week and ends up in the hospital for a few days. Maria lives in the waiting room. Her check-in comes due and she does not think about it once.

Here is what Killswitch does, in order:

  1. A day before her check-in is due, Maria gets a friendly reminder. Email reminders go to her account email automatically. She also turned on text reminders, so it comes by text too. She does not see it.
  2. Her check-in date passes. Nothing is sent to Daniel. Her grace period starts instead.
  3. During grace, the reminders keep coming. For a grace period of 1 to 7 days, Killswitch sends one reminder each day of the grace window, and they get more urgent as the deadline gets closer. Maria's grace is 5 days, so that is a reminder every day of it.
  4. On day two of grace, Maria is in the hospital cafeteria and sees the text. She taps the link. She is checked in. No password, no sign-in.

The clock resets to a fresh 7 days. Daniel received nothing. He had no idea any of this happened. Until the grace period runs out with no check-in, nothing goes out.

Longer grace periods work a little differently. With 8 or more days of grace, reminders go out when grace starts and at the halfway mark, then as critical alerts 3 days, 2 days, and 1 day before the switch fires. With a grace period of 1 day or more, a final warning comes 24 hours before the switch fires. Every switch gets a final notice 3 hours before.

How long is the grace period?

As long as you want. You choose two numbers for each switch: how often you check in, and how many days of grace follow a missed check-in.

The shortest check-in period is 1 day (24 hours). Grace can be zero, which skips straight to the deadline. At 1 day with zero grace, there is no day-before reminder and no grace reminders, only a final notice 3 hours before the switch fires. That tight setting only suits someone who really will check in every day.

Most people do better with a cadence they can keep and a grace period that covers a real bad week. Maria picked 5 days because a hospital stay is exactly the week she worries about. If you travel or are often hard to reach, give yourself more. The math of check-in cadence walks through the tradeoff.

Can you check in straight from the reminder?

Yes. Every reminder email and text includes a quick check-in link. Tapping it checks you in right away, with no sign-in. The link can only do one thing, which is check you in. It works once and expires after 24 hours.

There are other ways too:

  • In the app. Check In All on your dashboard or Switches page resets every active check-in switch at once.
  • On login. An optional setting checks in all your active switches every time you sign in. It is off by default.
  • For a group. If you put several switches in a switch group, they share one schedule, one set of reminders, and one check-in link.

Any check-in, from any of these, resets the whole reminder ladder back to the start.

What if it goes out by mistake anyway?

The reminders and the grace period are there to make an accidental release rare. Rare still means it can happen, so here is what you can do.

You can revoke every link that switch created, right away, even if the recipient already opened the email. The access log shows whether anything was opened. One honest limit: revoking cannot pull back a file someone already downloaded.

You can also see every message Killswitch sent. The Communication Log under Settings, Activity lists every email and text sent to you and to your people, and whether it landed. If a reminder bounced, it shows there.

When does it actually go out?

Only when the grace period ends with no check-in.

If Maria really did stop checking in, Daniel would get an email, and a text if his number is on file, with a secure link to the note and the insurance scans. He would not need a Killswitch account. If Maria added her name in Settings, the email leads with it, so he knows it came from his sister. He would open it and know what she knew: the doses, the pharmacy, the doctors, the cards, the people at Dad's building.

That is the point. Not to send something the moment you look away. To get it to the one person who needs it when you really can't hand it over yourself. For the receiving end, see what to do when the Killswitch email arrives.

How do you set it up so forgetting stays harmless?

  1. Write the note first. What only you know, and who needs it.
  2. Pick a cadence you will actually keep. Daily only works if you really check in daily.
  3. Pick a grace period you would accept on your worst week. Hospital stay, long trip, lost phone.
  4. Turn on text reminders. Email is automatic. Texts are opt-in under Settings, Notifications, for US and Canadian numbers.
  5. Run a test fire. You get a real test delivery marked TEST, so you see what your person would get. They are not notified.
  6. Pause before you go off grid. A paused switch sends no reminders and does not fire. Resume it and the schedule restarts from that moment.

FAQ

What happens if I forget to check in on Killswitch?

If you have a grace period set, nothing goes out right away. The grace period starts, and Killswitch sends reminders by email, and by text if you turn texts on. Every reminder has a one-tap check-in link. If you check in at any point during grace, the clock resets and nobody is sent anything.

How many reminders do I get before anything is sent?

It depends on your schedule. On check-in periods longer than 1 day, the first reminder comes a day before your check-in is due. With 1 to 7 days of grace, you get one each day of grace, more urgent as the deadline nears. With 8 or more days, they come at the start, the halfway mark, and 3, 2, and 1 day before the switch fires. Every switch gets a final notice 3 hours before it fires.

Can I check in from the reminder without signing in?

Yes. Each reminder email and text has a quick check-in link. Tapping it checks you in without a sign-in. The link can only perform a check-in, works once, and expires after 24 hours.

What is the shortest check-in period?

1 day (24 hours). Grace can be set to zero, which skips straight to the deadline. Most people are better off with a longer cadence and a grace period that covers a hard week.

Who gets notified if I miss a check-in?

You do. Reminders during the grace period go to you, not to your recipients. Your people only receive the delivery if the grace period ends with no check-in and the switch fires.

What if my switch fires by mistake?

It is rare, because of the reminders and grace period. If it happens, you can revoke every link the switch created right away, and the access log shows whether anything was opened. Revoking cannot pull back a file someone already downloaded.
