Core Concepts

Tags

Tags are a fast, cross-cutting way to organize your Library — apply one to anything, then filter down to it from anywhere, regardless of which folder it's filed in.

What you can tag

You can add tags to documents, notes, video and audio messages, journal entries, and to folders and notebooks themselves — anything in your Library can carry one or more tags. Tagging is separate from filing something in a folder: an item can be in exactly one folder (or none), but carry as many tags as you like.

Add or remove tags from an item's own page. Type into the tag field and Killswitch suggests tags you've already used, ranked by how often you use them, so you can reuse an existing tag instead of accidentally creating a near-duplicate. Tags are automatically put in Title Case as you save them — typing "my important tag" becomes My Important Tag, so the same tag typed two different ways doesn't turn into two separate tags.

Filtering by tag

Click any tag in your Library to filter down to everything carrying it — items, folders, and notebooks alike, pulled from your whole Library rather than just one folder. A notebook's own entry list also has a search box that matches an entry's tags as well as its title, so you can find a tagged entry without leaving the notebook. Clear the filter to go back to your normal view.

Managing your tags

The Manage Tags page lists every tag you've created, alongside how many items and how many folders or notebooks carry it, and lets you:

  • Create a new tag directly, without tagging anything yet.
  • Rename a tag — the new name applies instantly everywhere the tag is used, with nothing else to update.
  • Merge two tags into one — everything carrying either tag ends up carrying just the target tag, and the source tag is removed. Useful for cleaning up near-duplicates like "Financial" and "Finances."
  • Delete a tag entirely — it's removed from everything it was applied to, but the items, notes, and notebooks themselves are untouched.

Reach it from your Library, or go directly to Manage Tags.

Tags stay private to you

Tags are for your own organization — they don't travel with anything you share. Someone who receives a shared item, folder, or notebook, whether through a share link or a deadman switch delivery, never sees the tags you applied to it. See What You'll Receive for exactly what a recipient does see.

The same applies to Claude, when you've connected it: Claude's Library tools can list and read your items and folders, but tags are never included in what Claude can see.
